Addition is used with all other functions of math, and when students are counting on their fingers, this not only slows down their work, but it also leaves an uncertainty of whether or not they have the correct answers. Finger counting also prompts a feeling of embarrassment and low self-esteem, especially when others can see they are not adding numbers in their head like good students should.
